The apparent change in the wind of a few weeks back did not materialise and with the north wind blowing hard again, good fishing continued mainly far out in the Rips, with some bigger marlin, both blues and blacks being caught.
After the good results in the Watamu and the Friends of Kenya tournaments anglers seemed keen to continue and the boats have been well booked. With days like anglers Gary Thornton and Steve Hair experienced on B's Nest when they tagged a black, a blue and a striped marlin as well as four sailfish for a full super grand slam, and a big yellowfin as well, and Neptune with Rick Le Monnier and Don Rafferty catching first a striped marlin, then a blue of about 160kgs and finally a black marlin estimated at over 200kgs, just missing the super slam when a pair of sailfish both fell off, everyone will continue to go out - one can fish for a lifetime without having such days!
A memorable catch in the Friends of Kenya tournament last week was a broadbill on fly tackle, achieved on B's Nest by local angler Ed Ghaui fishing with fly maestro Jeremy Block, who joins a select club of the fewer than ten anglers to have achieved this feat.
At Malindi, clubs from Belgium and Holland were fishing the Penn Challenge competition with eleven boats, two anglers to a boat. They had a good start, Snowgoose having a black and a striped marlin and four sail, while Snark had a blue, a stripey and two sail and Eclare two stripeys and five sail. Neptune, not in this competition, released a very nice blue marlin with Andy de Mare fishing, estimated at 240kgs. Amazing fishing, with nearly all the boats out having a marlin as well as sailfish.
Mid-March is the time we associate with bigger fish, blue and black marlin in the 200kg range and over, so it is a popular time, but the risk is always that the weather will change and the wind will blow from the south-east - this almost immediately sends the marlin swimming away on their annual migration, although quite where they go to is not certain - generally they make off south then probably out into the middle of the Indian Ocean, presumably to spawn as there is no evidence these fish spawn in Kenyan waters.
Watamu boats also have continued to do well, all fishing the same areas around the Rips, and there have been some visiting boats with Kipapa, from Mtwapa, having some good days, scoring a grand slam with a black and a striped marlin and four sail, followed a couple of days later wih six sailfish, while Delta, also up from Mtwapa, found two striped marlin and three sail, with four sail the following day. Sand Dollar is a private boat, a beautiful Cabo 35 Express, and with two blue and a striped marlin and two sail followed two days later with a black marlin and a sail, then a stripey and a sail, she showed she can hold her own with the big professional boats, with owner Chris Venn's son Simon proudly going away with a tag and release catch certificate for all four billfish to show his mates!
Jasiri, formerly based in Shimoni, has now moved to Watamu and joined the Allen stable with Simba, and skipper George Allen did well to tag a black marlin and weigh a blue of 119 kgs, while Tega tagged another good black marlin estimated at 120kgs with Neil McGogun on the rod. Mark Laverty and Pete Green on White Bear released a blue and two stripies, Martin Davidson and Caroline had eight sail on Ol Jogi followed two days later by a stripey and four sail and B's Nest tagged two blue marlin with Roy Laverty, so we can look forward to more great days if the wind keeps blowing right!

KILIFI CLASSIC TOURNAMENT 27/28 FEB FINDS BILLFISH
The annual KILIFI International Classic tournament, sponsored by Weetabix, was fished last weekend in good weather, and nine marlin and sixty-five sailfish, all tagged and released, were caught by the fifteen boats so there was plenty of action.
Overall winner was the team on Simba, Paul Worthington, skipper Mark Allen and Mtawali Zia, which had five sailfish on the first day, but really swung into action on the Sunday, when they added a blue and two striped marlin and another sailfish to total 4219 points, a commanding lead over Unreel, fished by Colin van Rooyen, Mike Mitchell and Ray Singh with a striped marlin and nine sailfish.
This placed the Unreel team first in the professional stream, behind the overall winner, followed by the Seahorse team, Angus Ker, Brendan Bowles and Rob Barnett with a striped marlin and seven sail. Rob, a yachtsman, won the most meritorious award for his first ever billfish catches of a striped marlin and three sailfish. Third in this stream was Delta, fished by R.Rosl, Ken Rodwell and Mike, with a striped marlin and six sail.
Kipapa was fourth with Snoo Colville winning best Lady Angler for her striped marlin and a sailfish, while in the amateur stream Minerva, with Anne Taylor, Rosanno Ricci and Andrew Buckoke took first place with three sail, also winning the small boat prize as well as the Partridge Memorial Trophy. Paul Worthington won the prize for the best overseas angler, while Mtawali Zia got the award for the most billfish tagged, and this very popular competition was much enjoyed by all.
This coming weekend the focus switches to Watamu for their annual Fly540 tournament over the weekend, followed by the Hemingways sponsored Friends of Kenya tournament , fished for two days and a night on the Tuesday 9th/Wednesday 10th March. If the billfish keep coming, these should be two fun competitions and good entries are expected.
This last week has seen plenty of sailfish and striped marlin being caught around the Rips, with the added bonus of the run of wahoo which can be expected on the Banks when the clean blue water current runs after a southerly push.
From Hemingways B's Nest with Paul Belcher and Peter Corbett found two stripeys and a sail, Ron Huggins on Ol Jogi had a stripey and two sail, while Sea Storm with Justus Potgeiter and Anthonis Westrate also had a stripey and a sail, while next day Bamara with Dicky Evans and Stuart Mitchell tagged five sail as well as catching yellowfin, dorado and wahoo. Ol Jogi then found a stripey and ten sail a couple of days later again for Ron Huggins, fishing further outside the normal area of the Rips - this was the first day of the Kilifi competition but the boat was not entered!
At Malindi, the boats venturing out to the Rips have been catching marlin, with Clive Watts on Neptune hooking a black marlin estimated at 300kgs on a live friggie on the downrigger. The leader was taken after two hours, a big fish and interesting that some other good blacks were hooked in the same area. The same boat tagged another black next day and Snark also had a black marlin, but they found a hot spot for wahoo and landed twenty-eight of these, running about ten to twelve kilos each - really non -stop action with these fish as they attack in packs and all run when hooked in different directions! Tina, Snark and Snowgoose all caught about twenty wahoo again the next day - fun fishing but these fish do not score highly like billfish in tournaments.

Kenyas national airline, 'KENYA AIRWAYS', provides daily flights to the coast a popular destination with its excellent and well defined tourism industry including world- class sports fishing.
Saltwater game fishing has developed in Kenya over the past 40 years in to a world-class fishery. It is one of the few destinations where no less than six species of billfish may be caught. Terms like Grand Slam, Super Slam, and Fantasy Slam have become synonymous with Kenya fishing in recent years.
The 2008-09 fishing season produced some of the most incredible fishing ever witnessed. Catches of 20-30 sailfish released by a single boat were not uncommon. There were also two fantasy slams (five species of billfish in a fishing trip) and five marlin larger than 350-kg. Skipper Callum Looman recorded more than 100 marlin for the season, only the third skipper in Kenya to do so.
The Kenya Association of Sea Anglers (K.A.S.A) is the governing body for saltwater sports fishing in Kenya and a member of the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), the world's governing body for sport fishing. KASA is the angler's voice with the Kenya Government on all issues affecting the sport including legislation, fisheries and environmental issues.
KASA has also defined the standards by which all charter boats registered with the association are expected to adhere in the form of a "code-of-conduct". However, visitors should be aware that not all boats offered for charter in Kenya are members of KASA and hence are not bound by the association's regulations.
